What’s in a name?

I went with some friends to see the Nutcracker ballet a few days ago.  It was the first ballet I’ve ever watched live.  Although I enjoyed it, I must say that I saw men wearing shirts that I NEVER want to see on a male body again.  Men in belly shirts are disturbing.  Especially when they shake their hips.  I think I’ll have nightmares.  It was disgusting, to say the least.  Also, I saw sweat literally fly off of one actor every time he moved.  That, too, was gross.

However, other scenes were very entertaining.  One man (dressed decently!) danced to The 12 Days of Christmas and he was hilarious.  My favorite part was listening to the quartet sing.  They had such fun, jazzy renditions of the classic Christmas carols!

I left the ballet with the question that has always disturbed me about this show.  Perhaps someone out there can answer it:  WHY DO THEY CALL IT “THE NUTCRACKER”???  It has nothing to do with a nutcracker. This has puzzled me since I saw the show as a child!  It makes no sense!  If you can, please enlighten me!
